Assistive Technology for Children And Play

Play is an important of children’s life. Children with different abilities will not have the same opportunities to play. Assistive technologies can have a role to facilitate play for children.

Scoping review

We conducted a scoping review to explore how technology can support play in children with physical disabilities. Our study revealed that various technologies, including robots, virtual reality, games, adaptations for upper limb differences, power mobility devices such as toy cars, and low-tech adaptations, have been used to facilitate play.

Power mobility

We are presently conducting a study called Power-up, which is funded by an ENRRICH catalyst grant in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Centre for Children (RCC). This study aims to explore the experiences of children, caregivers, and teachers/educational assistants whose children are first-time users of power wheelchairs and their transition from a manual wheelchair to a power wheelchair.

Dice model of paly

Play is an important of children’s life. Children with different abilities will not have the same opportunities to play. Assistive technologies can have a role to facilitate play for children. We are working on developing a comprehensive model of play; named as "Dice Model of Play"

  • Phase 1: We will explore play from the perspective of children with physical disabilities and their caregivers
  • Phase 2: Children with different abilities will not have the same opportunities to play. Assistive technologies can have a role to facilitate play for children.
  • Phase 3: In the Level-up project we are trying to learn about children’s experience while they are using an adaptor attached to a controller.
